It may seem like your property taxes increase every year, but there is something you can do to reduce the cost just. Filing for a homestead exemption can save you an average of $75 to $130. Oklahoma County Assessor Leonard Sullivan says a homestead exemption is simple to understand. He says it is basically a way to reduce the taxable value of your home by $1,000.

In order to qualify you must own your home and it must be your primary residence.

Another benefit of having your home labeled as a homestead means almost no one can take it from you.

Sullivan says, "Your mortgage company can sue you and take it away if you don't make your mortgage payment, but no one else can sue you and take your house away from you."

An application for homestead exemption can be downloaded off of the county assessor's web site and mailed to the assessor's office.

An application can also be picked up at the county assessor's office.
