Week 6 Winning Tip
"Keep all closet doors closed. That cuts down on the square footage that the air conditioner has to cool. Get a clothes line. Everything can't be dried on the clothes line like towels (too scratchy) and perma-pressed clothes, but sheets smell wonderful when dried outdoors, and lots of items like socks and underwear will keep their elasticity longer when kept out of the dryer. Heavy items like throw rugs, blankets, and mattress pads will dry much faster outside. Another way to keep the kitchen cooler besides the ones mentioned by the Week 1 winner is to buy the roasted chickens at the grocery. Then use in any recipe calling for cooked chicken. Use the microwave or crockpot as much as possible. Turn the dish washer to air dry instead of heat dry." -- Ann W., Minco
Week 5 Winning Tip
"I changed all of my light bulbs to energy saving bulbs. In addition, when I'm not using my hot tub, I keep it covered. I also keep my lights turned off and unplug appliances like TV's and DVD's when not in use. Plus, I use fans to keep my apartment cool." -- Randi S., Oklahoma City
Week 4 Winning Tip
"We keep our shades, blinds and drapes closed during the day to keep the blazing sun out. It's amazing how much cooler the house feels!" -- Jenny D., Edmond
Week 3 Winning Tip
"We bought a digital thermostat so that we can manage the temperature constantly. We never have to remember to adjust the temperature each time we leave the house. We set it to automatically adjust to 73 degrees at night to sleep. Then at 5:30am, we set it to 75 degrees. Then at 8am, we set it to 80 degrees. Then at 5pm, we set it to 75 degrees." -- Martin H., Oklahoma City
Week 2 Winning Tip
"This year my family and I really wanted to commit to being 'greener' so to decrease energy use, we have begun to turn up the air temp every three days another degree to help acclimate to a higher temperature and develop comfort. Its amazing how going from 70 degree room to 75 isn't that big of a difference but energy wise it is." -- Dallas L., Oklahoma City
Week 1 Winning Tip
"I have a roaster oven that I like to cook with so that I'm not heating up my entire oven if I don't have to. But in the summer, I move my roaster and crockpot outside, and we cook with those or grill so that we don't heat up the kitchen and the air conditioner runs less." -- Rebecca B., Oklahoma City
