Deer Creek shortens school year
EDMOND, OK -- A new state law is allowing a metro school district to shorten their district calendar. Earlier this spring Governor Henry signed a bill giving more control of the school year to individual districts.

The bill gives districts the choice of completing their school year in 180 days or 1,080 hours.

Deer Creek is one of the first to benefit from the new law. The districts school year, which had been extended by one day, has now been changed again to reflect the original calendar year.

What that means for students and parents is the last day of school will now be May 21st, instead of May 22nd.

District officials say by the end of the school year students will have exceeded the 1,080 classroom hours needed.

Lenis DeReiux, with Deer Creek Schools, says, "We're pleased that we can go back to our original calendar. We just feel it benefits our families and our teachers."

The announcement came as a surprise to parents. The district has made an announcement about the change on their Web site, but it will be later in the week before an announcement is sent home with students.
