OKLAHOMA CITY -- Families who want change at the State Medical Examiner's office took to the Capitol steps Thursday to urge lawmakers to make changes in the laws that govern that office. Five families who are battling the Medical Examiner's office regarding the death of loved ones, were on hand to tell their stories.

The families are circulating a petition which demands change and better oversight of the M.E.'s Office Board.

They are also asking Lt. Governor Jeri Askins to make changes in the M.E.'s office part of her platform while running for Governor.

The attorney representing many of the families angry with the M.E.'s office, Jaye Mendros, explained their requests.

"We are asking that she either appoint the members of the board so when they fail in their duties, we can go over their heads to her or governor or make it an elected spot."

Askins' office said they are reviewing the information.

Cherokee Ballard, from the M.E.'s office, said they stand by past decisions, but are looking toward changes in the future.

"We are open to anything to make this a better place; employees here feel that they're tired of the turmoil."
