EDMOND, OK -- A threatening e-mail about gang activity is causing concern among Edmond residents. The message looks like a warning about "national gang week". It says gangs are using car seats placed along the side of the road to entice people into stopping to make sure everything is alright; that's when the gang members allegedly strike.

The part that makes this e-mail look legit is the signature line which is stolen from an Edmond police sergeant.

Edmond resident Lisa Millspaugh asks, "Why would someone even do that? That's really strange. I don't understand what the purpose would be for that."

Glynda Chu with the Edmond Police Department is asking herself the same question and wants to make sure people realize it's not true.

She says, "The media would have been reporting on it if we had something horrible like that happening here in Edmond."

The sergeant named in the e-mail has answered more than 100 calls about it; enough to force him to change his phone number.

Chu says, "It is an inconvenience for us and for him, but the bigger concern, of course, is to make sure people know this isn't real. This isn't happening thankfully and it's all a big hoax."

So what should you do if you get the e-mail? Follow what Millspaugh does.

She says, "I would probably just delete it. Not really pay that much attention to it."

Officers say although the situation in this e-mail is made up, the message is still a good one.

If you see a scenario where someone could be in danger, it's always best to call police for help.
