Shooting at Langston university
OKLAHOMA CITY -- What started as a welcome back party on campus ended with gunfire at Langston University. At least one person opened fire in the parking lot behind Jones Hall around 1am Sunday morning. According to an LU Spokesperson, five people were injured. One in the thigh, another in the back, and one bullet grazed a victim's head. None of the victims were Langston students.

Student Government Vice President Javon Brame heard the shots and saw the victims loaded into ambulances. He says, "We're happy that it wasn't Langston University students, but very sad and upset that something like this did occur on our campus."

Logan County sheriff's deputies took five people into custody. They were also not students at Langston. OSBI spokesperson Jessica Brown says one person, 23-year-old David Stephens, was arrested for reckless handling of a firearm. Investigators believe more people are involved in the incident.

Another non-Langston student was in trouble with LU Police Sunday for allegedly trying to use her vehicle as a deadly weapon. It's not clear if that incident is related to the shooting. The victim in that case only had minor injuries.

The president of Langston University, JoAnn Haysbert, issued a statement saying she is appalled and disappointed by these acts of violence. She says they plan to pursue this to the fullest extent of the law.

Students we spoke with say they want to make sure the violence doesn't leave a lasting impression of the University. Brame says, "Most of the time if we have a problem, it's people bringing those problems to our campus. We're going to make sure we do a better job of making sure we keep these people off of our campus and make sure they don't bring their trouble here."
