MYRTLE BEACH, SC -- A wildfire has destroyed dozens of homes in the popular vacation destination, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The fire started Wednesday and was fanned by strong winds overnight.
So far the blaze has consumed more than 15,000 acres or about 23 square miles.
While most of the area burned is forest, officials say as many as 70 homes have been destroyed.
Thousands of residents were evacuated overnight as 30 mile per hour winds fanned the flames.
Officials have not determined what started the fire.
The area is a popular tourist attraction with college students, families and golfers.
