TECUMSEH, OK -- Should a campus resource officer be allowed to carry a taser? That's the question being asked in Tecumseh. According to police Chief Gary Crosby, the campus resource officer at the local high school will be issued the high-tech device in the next couple of weeks along with the rest of the department.
Those around town have mixed emotions about the taser being on school grounds, even though the officer already carries a hand gun.
"For one it's dangerous," said local resident Sean Thompson. "If you get a kid that is doing something wrong, they need to be disciplined not hurt."
Despite recent reports, Crosby says the taser will not be used to scare students; it will only be pulled out in drastic situations.
"If a student was out of control, fighting, you couldn't get their attention you couldn't get them to stop if they were going on a tirade throwing chairs, brandishing some kind of a weapon, trying to harm somebody," said Chief Crosby
Before any officer is given a taser they are required to have extensive training on how to properly use it.
