THE VILLAGE, OK -- Leaders in the Village are considering reviving their curbside recycling program, but with a twist. The Village canceled their curbside service in 2008 after demand for recycled materials plummeted nationwide. The new service though would come with a catch; it won't be free. If the program is approved, it would cost every home in the Village $5 per month. "Recycling, unfortunately, is costly. Someone has to pay the cost of it," said Village city manager Bruce Stone.
Stone says the proposed program would feature a unique system of incentives.
Recycled materials would be weighed when being picked up.
The weight would be converted to points.
Then those points would be turned into rewards at local and national businesses.
The goal is to encourage more people to take part
"The recycle bank gives us the opportunity to reward the recycler," said Stone. "There is a charge and people have to pay, but they can more than recover that from the redemption process."
No decisions have been made.
City leaders are still trying to gauge public opinion on the issue.
If the program is adopted, it would begin sometime early next year.
