NEW YORK -- Got a couple extra thousand dollars for forks and knives? The Navy hopes you have a few extra thousand dollars to buy stuff for the USS New York from Tiffany. The ship was partially built with steel salvaged from the World Trade Center towers and was named to commemorate the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

When the ship is commissioned next month it wants to be served on a silver platter. Specifically, sterling silver platters from Tiffany & Co.

The Navy has set up a gift registry on Tiffany's site for the public to donate silverware to the ship.

One featured item: a George IV tray with handles. The ship needs five of them at $13,600 each.

If that's too steep, the ship could also use matching Queen Anne coffee and tea pots at $3,600 to $4,200 each.

Ice buckets are a combined $4,000 and at just $2,800 a Chippendale tray seems like a bargain.

What should the ship be spending on forks and knives?

Tiffany's Hampton forks, knives and spoons range from $150 to $300. The Navy is asking for several dozen of each.

As you might imagine no one NewsChannel 3 spoke to plans on buying anything for the ship.

Fancy silverware is, of course, common on most ships for distinguished parties and other events.

The silverware usually donated by a sponsor though.
